I’m back again with a chickpeas related post. This time it’s a bonus video for my Premium Content subscribers. In it you can hear me read the Middle English recipe for smoked chickpeas, Chycches. The recipe is found in Fourme of Cury, which dates to around 1390, so the English is of the same period as Chaucer.
In addition there’s my modern English translation and a few observations on the dish based on commentary in my forthcoming book How to Cook in the Fourteenth Century.
I hope you like it!

Love it! It’s always fun to hear these read, and to see how different these recipes are from more modern ones. Thanks!
